The Department of Botany was established in 1964. The first Head of the Department was Prof.V.Gowri. The Department was later headed by Prof. M. M. Devaki, Dr. G. R. KanthaRaj, (an erudite Professor, ‘a walking library’ as he was known by his students, an alumnus of the Department of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science)headed the department and developed a strong team.
The department was started in the year 1945 and has completed seventy one successful years. One of the striking features of the department is that many teachers from this department occupied important positions in the college as well as in the Bangalore University.The department is equipped with spacious laboratories and also many types of equipment which are used by students and the staff regularly.
The department was started in the year 2009. This is one of the Biggest Department in the college. Prof. Sarjapur Nataraj was the founder and a popular teacher has served the department as its head for five years. Now Dr. Ravikumar. R is serving as the head of the Department. The Department of Commerce, one of the oldest and largest departments of the University, believes in developing and nurturing global competencies in students through quality education.
The department of Computer Science was established in 1988. It was started with a generous donation by Dr. A. H. Rama Rao, the President and Sri. B.C.S. Narayan, former Vice-President of “The National Education Society of Karnataka”. Dr. A. H. Rama Rao was the first Head of the department of Computer Science. He made sure that the laboratories built are equipped with all necessary logistics that are convenient for the students.
The Department of Economics was started in the year 1975. Prof. Sheshappa was the first Head of the Department. He was assisted by a visiting faculty Prof. S. Ramesh of the Vijaya College and Prof. M Siddanand of the SJRC College, Bangalore which are renowned Colleges situated in the South of Bangalore. Prof. Sheshappa joined the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) in the year 1983. In the same year Dr. PadminiRao was transferred from the First Grade College, Kolar Gold Fields. She headed the Department and retired in February 2013. She has been assisted by eminent visiting faculty whenever the need arose.
The department of electronics was started in the year 1988-89. The laboratories were built with the generous donation of Sri L.S. Purushotham in memory of his wife Mrs. Vasantha Purushotham. Prof.. T Ashwathnarayana Rao was the head of the department. The department of Electronics was headed by Sri. Malatesh S. Akkur whose enthusiasm made this department to do the best for the students. Now the department is headed by Smt. Poornima Hegde. It has two members of teaching staff and one non-teaching staff.
The Department of English came into existence in 1945 along with the college. Since Language- English is a compulsory subject for the students, all the streams, BA, B.Sc, BCA B.Com, BS have to go through a course in English for four Semesters. Optional English for BA for six Semesters. [ Combination available- Sociology, Economics, Optional English. Communicative skills- compulsory for all streams in the V/VI Semesters. The Communicative Skill programme addresses the problems students have with close reading, writing, listening and speaking English. But in addition to this, students are also trained in soft skills required by them when they face interviews and get into jobs.
The Department was established in the year 1945. Hindi is offered as one of the languages for all streams of learning in the college along with Kannada and Sanskrit. The Syllabus framed in 2006 when the college became autonomous underwent a change in 2010. A module of Creative Writing was introduced for the BCA and B.Com classes. An introduction to scientific terminology was incorporated into the syllabus for BCA. In the same way commercial letters and commercial terminology was incorporated into the syllabus for B.Com. Our College library is well equipped with many good books in Hindi. Every year the department recommends books to the library, which caters to the needs of the students and the staff.
The Department of Human Resource Management came into existence in the year 2008. Prof. Moulesh, Department of Sociology and Dr.Padmini Rao, Department of Economics, were in charge of the department until 2009. It was later headed by Prof. Sushma.S.V. She got her post graduate degree in M.B.A. with a specialization in Finance from VTU. She has experience in working with corporate organizations. She is also a leading Theatre Personality and training students in the ‘Art of Theatre’. She is a resource person at a theatre school for children called ‘Bimba’. Field work and visits to few organizations in order to understand how an HR Department actually works.
Indian constitution is being taught as a compulsory paper to students of all streams of learning in the college as per the guidelines of the UGC. The department has one full-time faculty, Dr.Padma T. MA, PhD. It is one of the four subjects which have been made compulsory for students of all courses. The paper is treated on par with the other core subjects and the student has to pass this paper in the same manner that he does the core papers. The department provides additional tests apart from the general evaluation done by the college. Students also have to prepare two assignments before taking the end semester examination. Dr. T.Padma is also the co-ordinator for the add-on course on ‘Gandhi and Social Development’, and the Convener of the Gandhi Study Cirdle in the College.
The Department of Journalism was established in 2006. the Department of Journalism, led by Prof. Sri. Yogitha P., offers Bachelor of Arts courses with a focus on Reporting, Editing, and Audio-Visual Media. The curriculum includes practical training in Electronic Media Programming and Teleprinter editing, along with communication basics. Through the Journo Club, students engage in creating wall journals and magazines like ‘PRERANA.’ The department’s resources include a Sony Handy Camera, laptop, and still camera, facilitating modern teaching methods such as desktop editing and documentary film production. Faculty members actively contribute to academic activities, like Kusuma R.’s involvement in curriculum development. Future plans entail establishing Television and Radio Studios, alongside a documentary-making laboratory, enriching students’ practical learning experiences.

Notably, it offers innovative courses like BA in Mathematical Applications in Economics and BCom in Business Mathematics. The syllabi cover advanced topics such as Topology and Operations Research, supported by modern teaching methods. The department fosters collaborations with prestigious institutions like I.I.Sc. and T.I.F.R. Innovative practices include competitions and problem-solving classes under the Mathematics Association “Omega.” Future plans include establishing a Mathematics Lab and offering aptitude classes to enhance students’ skills.

The department of Sociology was established in the year 1975 with undergraduate course in Sociology. The postgraduate course (MA) was started in the year 2011-12. Eminent sociologists, scholars enabled the department to attain national stature. The faculty is drawn from acclaimed institutions such as Bangalore University, ISEC, National Law School and other distinguished visiting scholars who have specialised in the areas of Sociology.The faculty has published books, papers both at the national and international level and distinguished professors in the field of sociology. In three years of its inception the PG department has the credit of 7 students who have cleared the UGC- NET and SLET exams. Students have also published papers in National Conferences and Seminars.
Established in 1964, the Department of Zoology offers a 3-year B.Sc. program covering Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. It boasts a well-equipped museum with rare specimens and models for anatomy and embryology. The department also teaches Environmental Studies to all college degree students. With a library housing 135 books and modern teaching methods like seminars and project works, it fosters holistic learning. Collaborations with Botany, Chemistry, and Sociology enrich the curriculum. Ongoing projects focus on diverse topics like apiculture and genetic diseases, with plans for new courses in Microbiology and Biotechnology. The faculty, led by Mr. Ramesh P L, brings extensive experience and expertise, ensuring quality education and future expansion into research and interdisciplinary studies.
